Indie Advent Calendar-Intro and Day 1: BPAL’s Djinn

Hey friends!

So my Christmas gift from Mr. Danger has been in the works for quite awhile now, and I finally get to open it! I love Advent calendars because I love counting down to things, (who doesn’t like anticipating an event, it makes it more fun), and I noticed back in October indie samples fit very nicely into small boxes.

Tada! An idea was born!

I’ve been slowly ordering little samples for the past two months, (I love Mr. Danger and he has good taste in perfumes, but I don’t trust his eye shadow and blush judgement) and Mr. Danger assembled them into a little indie advent calendar for me!

This entire project did cost me a little under $100, but it was spread out over three months, and it’s my Christmas gift, and I have the flu right now-so I’m done making justifications.

Also if you wanted to do this for cheaper you could stick to just one company (I bought from several, which upped the shipping costs), and you could do 12 Days of Christmas instead.  The boxes Mr. Danger used are a free printable from: Hey Look.

Anyway, I decided to share my daily little gifts because some of them might be products people are interested in trying. Plus it’s more fun to share rather than run around my house yelling, “LOOK WHAT I GOT!” to the man who already packed the gift. (The dog doesn’t care either.)

Day One: Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab’s Djinn, $4 an imp. Buy 6 imps, get $2 off.

BPAL General Info: I placed my first BPAL order in October to try 6 imps. It took about a month to process the order, and shipping took 2 days. I also received 4 free imps in my order. (Imps being BPAL’s sample sizes).

At this point I can’t remember what I ordered, so all the imps in the calendar will be very surprising to me!

Djinn –The scent of black smoke, of crackling flames, and smoldering ashes
Okay, so this may have not been the best sample to start off the indie calendar. But, oh well!

I ordered this scent knowing it would be kinda challenging, but I thought I would be up for it because I like smokey scents. Seriously, if it smells burned, I’m in! (I’m a weirdo, not sorry.)

However, this just smells bitter and acrid to me. It does kinda remind me of when you have just lit a campfire and it’s blazing, but it’s not pleasant to me. I think I get some pine and vevtier in this, and it kinda gives me a headache. Sadly, I barely get any smoke. Unfortunately, a major dislike.

I’m totally open-minded about BPAL still and can’t wait to try the other goodies Mr. Danger packed in the calendar. This just wasn’t the scent for me.

Questions of the Day:
-Do you like Advent Calendars?
-Have you ever had a scent that did NOT work for you?

Love,

Rebs

I’m a little late to the game seeing as how I just found your blog, but I absolutely love this idea! I’m getting into Indie makeup more and looking around for some subscription services… which is how I found you. Coincidentally I also love craft beer! Thanks for the posts!

    • Hey and welcome! Indie makeup and craft beer are some of my passions, so hopefully you’ll find something helpful around here! I was actually planning on writing a beginner indie post soon, as it seems to be a growing interest for a lot of people!

Glad you found me and don’t hesitate to ask any questions or say hi! 🙂

  2. Obviously this is from awhile ago, but this is a genius idea! Advent calendars are my favorite, and samples sizes are also my favorite and those boxes are precious. It’s only February, but I’m definitely gonna make this happen come December.

    • It was the best Christmas ever! I hope to do it again next year, providing Mr. Danger doesn’t cry when he finds out he has to pack 25 tiny boxes again. My advice is start ordering your little samples early, because some indies take longer than others to arrive!
