Hey friends!
Ah, the smell of coffee and swatching in the morning. I’m definitely enjoying Subscription Weekends.
So this month’s Notoriously Morbid Vanishing Cabinet was Jem and the Hologram themed. Let me just take a second to giggle and squeal.
Um, I love Jem. I used to watch it CONSTANTLY on VHS from the Latest and Greatest Video Rental store, (I bet some of you don’t even know what that is. I am an internet GRANDMA.) I can basically sing the majority of the songs to you, though I don’t have the range of Jem, so it would be pretty terrible.
Mr. Danger eventually bought it for me on DVD. I may or may not have been an adult at the time. Basically, Jem is excitement. Jem is adventure. Jem is truly outrageous, people.
So I knew when Notoriously Morbid announced their Jem theme, that I would love it so hard. SO HARD.
Glamour and glitter, friends.
For those of you who are new to Notoriously Morbid’s Vanishing Cabinet, it’s a themed indie beauty subscription that costs about $13 a month. The products are usually eye shadow with a blush or lip product included. You can check out my other reviews here, here, and here.
Here’s what I got this month:
Let’s check out the eye shadows. (PS: Everything is swatched over Glamour Doll Eyes’ Glitter Fix because that’s how I live my life.)
Headstrong–Aja can and will do whatever she wants, especially if it’s for the good of the group.A slightly greyed teal full of pink and purple sparkles.
This was one of my favorite shades this month. It’s a really pretty teal with TONS O’ GLITTER. Drooooool.
Rebel–Kimber is always looking for a way to be noticed. She lives her life to suit her and that’s all right.
A rusty burnt red-orange with gold, slightly green shimmer.
Kimber always annoyed me a bit. She has some issues she needs to work out with Jem, but instead she always ran away with home or whined.
I do like her color though, it’s a really nice rust color with a bit of sparkle. I actually like colors like this, although it’s hard for me to use them very often.
Pureheart–Shana is quiet and keeps to herself most of the time, but inside is a creativity and loyalty that’s just beautiful.A vibrant purple with light iridescence and a strong metallic sheen.
Shana is pretty much my favorite Hologram. She is the only one with common sense, and her hair is perfection. My bestie and I @sparkerpants may or may not have made a shirt with her on it.
I was kinda disappointed by this shade, it’s a nice enough purple but it looked a lot like last month’s Jammies for Jason. Also it applied a bit patchy, so not my favorite formula.
Showtime–Those infamous words changed Jerrica’s life forever. A vivid pinky/coral with massive amounts of purple and pink sparkles.
I never understood why Jerrica thought it was a good idea to have an affair with Rio, her purple haired bae, as Jem. She could have told him? Rio did seem like a tool, TBH, so maybe she thought he couldn’t handle the truth.
Anyways, this is my other favorite shade this month, this is an awesome peachy-pink shade that is covered in glitter. Just massive glitter. Of course, I love it.
Show’s Over–Just like that, Synergy ends her spectacular show. A slightly warm purple with lots and lots of sparkle.
This comes across more as a blue with green sparkles to me, rather than a purple. It could be because I’m swatching it over a glitter glue. It’s a nice enough blue, but I do have some already tlike it.
Also, I would really like an explanation of the science behind Synergy and her abilities to create holograms. I mean, hypothetically speaking, weren’t Jem and the Holograms technically walking around naked with images of clothes projected on them? Even as a child, I wondered how this worked.
Starlight Lipcraft–The music company that was both Jerrica’s blessing and her bane as she fought to keep it. A soft pink with strong golden sheen and shimmer.
This lipgloss is wayyyy too sheer for my lips. It basically just looked like I was wearing chapstick with glitter. I’m probably going to have to pass this on to someone else.
I am having a ton of fun playing around with these colors. As a neutrals gal, color is really out of my comfort zone, so I’m getting to experiment a lot. Here are just a few things I’ve done so far.

Top: Glamour Doll Eye’s Juicy Mango on the inner corner with Showtime on the rest of my lid. Bottom left: Rebel all over the lid with GDE’s Vulnerable blended (not so artfully) into the center. Bottom Right: Headstrong on lid with Pureheart foiled as liner.
I still want to do kinda of a sunset look with Showtime, Rebel, and Pureheart. I think it can be done.
Overall:
This is kinda a mixed bag for me this month. First, I knew any Jem and the Holograms themed makeup is going to be full of bright colors, so while I can’t use these daily, I won’t hold that against Notoriously Morbid, because I love this theme and I’m having fun playing with color.
I think that Headstrong and Showtime are beautiful shades, and I like Rebel, as well. I was a bit disappointed by Pureheart, Show’s Over, and Starlight though. They weren’t very special colors and the formula was not my favorite.
Last month I found that I didn’t use a lot of my VC colors, (other than Fringe for Freddie), so I’m going to have to keep an eye on this subscription and see if the value for me is still there. Granted, everybody has a not so great box from time to time, so it could be that February is amaaazzing. (Although I can’t figure out the theme yet.)
PS:Very sad Zipper didn’t get his own color.
Questions of the Day:
-What did you think of this month’s VC?
-Have you ever seen Jem or are you not an Old?
-Should the Misfits have been arrested at some point for their crimes against humanity?
See you Monday!
Love,
Rebs
