It finally got down to the 80’s and 70’s(at some points) this past weekwned in my little part of the world. Naturally all the people around me put on sweaters and started ordering hot chocolate. Because fall is here!*
To celebrate this change in weather I knew it was time to take Happy Hour into some seasonal fall beers. I also knew it was time to debut two eye shadows that have been on display in my house these past few weeks. They have Groot and Nic Cage on them. Enough said.
Thankfully the grocery store was also selling fake orange, yellow, and red leaves because it does not look like fall anywhere near me!
So let’s bring on a pretend fall weekend with this week’s Happy Hour!
*Fall does not officially start until September 21. FYI. Thanks.
Makeup Product of the Week:Shiro Cosmetics, “I am Groot” and “Nic Cage Raking Leaves on a Brisk October Afternoon”, $6 each.
I’ve had my eye on Shiro Cosmetics for awhile but hadn’t had a chance to really explore them yet. They are a pretty well established company who’s tag line is “hand-crafted makeup and geekery”, so I knew they would be right up my alley. Their website is very easy to use and my order arrived five days after I placed it, so turn around times are fast!
What finally pushed me to place an order was the September Color of the Month: I am Groot. If you are married to a comic book nerd, (Hi, I am), or if you have seen Guardians of the Galaxy, most likely you also love Groot. (If you haven’t seen this movie, please leave your residence and do so now.)
Groot is my favorite. I love him. We are Groot, people.
So naturally I just had to buy the eye shadow named after him. And then when I saw Shiro makes Nic Cage products, well I threw that eye shadow in my cart too. As you do.
Anyways, geekiness aside, how do these hold up as eye shadows? Good news! They are fantastic!
I am Groot appears to have a taupe brown base with a green/gold shimmer layer. It’s one of those colors that shifts in different lightings, making it very pretty and complex. (Note: This is the first time I’ve called an eye shadow complex, but it’s legit.) I have actually worn this shade to work, because although it’s green I feel it’s a soft, subtle green.
Nic Cage Raking Leaves on a Brisk October Afternoon is going to be my new going out eye shadow color
if I ever do anything other than work again. It’s a dark brown with orange glitter highlights. I think it would work perfectly in a smokey eye look. (Also I’m going to wear it to my mom’s birthday on Sunday, because my family has been mocking me with Nic Cage references for years. That’s how we roll.)
I also received some beautiful samples with my order, and candy! I was so pleased, I turned around and bought my best friend, (who is equally geeky), several eye shadows and Nic Cage lip glosses for her birthday.
I hope she’s not reading this. Oops. All in all, I think this is an awesome company, and if you are new to indie cosmetics this is another one that would be for beginners.
My favorite Nic Cage performance: The Wickerman.
Beer of the Week: Breckenridge Brewery Autumn Ale
I really like Breckenridge, I think they have something for all beer lovers, and they are a great place to start if you are trying to develop your craft beer palette. (Their Vanilla Porter is super yummy, for example.)
Also I got to visit them in Denver, and I was ridiculously happy!
Anyway the Autumn Ale did not disappoint me. I was not expecting it to be so darkly colored or so richly flavored, but it was overall a win in my household.
It’s apparently in the style of an old ale, but I honestly thought it tasted a bit more like a porter. It has a nice caramel, malty taste, and is not bitter at all, but very smooth and drinkable.
For me, the taste is very much what I imagine for fall. I prefer darker beers when it gets colder outside, and the nutty, caramel taste makes this perfect for sipping outside on cool evenings. I would pair it with a strong cheese or even a dessert, like an apple crisp or bread pudding.
That’s it for this week! I have a ton of reviews and tips coming up for next week, (my mail carrier has been very busy lately, I might need to offer them a beer), so I’ll see you guys Monday with more budget offerings and cheap tricks!
Questions of the Day:
-Have you ever bought a product because of the marketing alone? (If they put Groot on diapers, I would probably buy them. Note: I don’t have a child.)
-Are you transitioning into any fall makeup colors yet?
-What is your favorite Nic Cage movie?
